In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory Qi (pronounced ‘chee’), or vital energy, flows through the body through a network of channels, or meridians. However stress causes a blockage of Qi flow which could manifest, for example, in the form of shoulder and neck pain or back pain.
However stress does often affect other parts of the body, and can present as general pain conditions, elevated blood pressure, insomnia, digestive disorders, and headaches. So using TCM, specifically selected acu-points can treat the root cause of these issues and alleviate symptoms caused by stress.
Acupressure helps reduce stress by increasing levels of endorphins, the natural pain-killing brain chemical. Acupressure can also help lower levels of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, which when elevated causes blood pressure to increase and may cause immune system suppression. Acupressure also effectively improves blood circulation, which oxygenates tissues, decreases heart rate and relaxes muscles.
According to TCM, in cases of stress Qi blockages are often associated with the Liver. Specially selected acu-points that regulate Liver energy while reducing stress-related symptoms will be used during a treatment session. As Qi is restored to a smooth flow, stress symptoms improve. When acupressure is combined with moxibustion, the imbalance caused by stagnated or depleted Qi is corrected.
In addition to acupressure, changes in lifestyle such as dietary modifications and gentle exercise, including tai chi and qi gong, can aid relaxation and general wellbeing.
This is an excellent calming and grounding point. Its called Heart Protector 6 (Inner Gate). Located on the medial side of the forearm, roughly 2 fingers width from the wrist crease in humans (and in horses its on the inside of the forelimb, directly in front of the chestnut).
It has a powerful calming action on the mind and can be used in cases of anxiety, irritability, pre-menstrual depression, AND it promotes sleep. And if that wasn’t enough it also has an action on the stomach, in cases of nausea and vomiting, acid regurgitation, hiccups and belching. AMAZING !
